ATM Cave

Swim, climb and wade into the Maya underworld. Actun Tunichil Muknal is the day in Belize that people never stop talking about.

All experiences

The experience

Actun Tunichil Muknal — the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre — is part archaeology, part pilgrimage. You'll swim into the mouth of the cave, wade upstream through chambers of rimstone pools, and finally climb into a cathedral where Maya priests left their world behind: pottery, fire-blackened by a thousand years, and the crystallised remains of the Crystal Maiden herself.

It is consistently ranked among the most extraordinary cave experiences on earth, and it sits close enough to San Ignacio that you'll be back at Villa Massis for dinner — telling the story badly, because it never comes out right.

What to expect

  • A guided journey by licensed ATM guides — groups are kept small by law
  • Swimming, wading and climbing through the cave system
  • Ancient Maya ceramics and skeletal remains, exactly where they were left
  • A jungle approach hike and river crossings
  • A very good appetite by the end
An underground river beneath the foothills of the Maya Mountains

Good to know

  • Cameras are not permitted inside — the memories are better anyway
  • You'll be wet all day; water shoes and quick-dry clothing are ideal
  • A reasonable level of fitness and comfort in water is required
  • We arrange everything: licensed guide, transport, timing
