The experience

Cahal Pech means Place of the Ticks — ignore the name. This was a Maya royal household, one of the oldest recognised Maya sites in the Belize River valley, and it sits on a forested hill directly above San Ignacio.

It's the gentlest of the great sites: shaded plazas, low temples you can climb between breakfast and lunch, and a small museum that makes the bigger sites deeper when you visit them afterwards.

What to expect

  • Seven plazas of temples, palaces and a ballcourt
  • Towering ceiba and cohune trees and excellent birdlife
  • A hilltop view across the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena
  • A compact site museum worth every minute
The iron bridge into San Ignacio town, minutes away

Good to know

  • A gentle start to the ruins circuit — ideal on arrival day
  • Wear sandals you can climb in
  • Ten minutes from Villa Massis — perfect before a town lunch
