Xunantunich Maya Ruins
Cross the Mopan on a hand-cranked ferry, then climb El Castillo until Belize and Guatemala open up beneath you.
The experience
You reach Xunantunich the way people have crossed this river for a very long time: on a small, hand-cranked ferry over the Mopan. Then the forest opens and El Castillo — one of the tallest structures in Belize — rises out of the green.
Climb to the top. From up there the whole of Western Belize rolls away toward the Guatemalan border, howler monkeys grumble in the canopy below, and the carved friezes of the ancient city catch the light. Guests often go twice — once guided, once again just to sit with it.
