Maya Cities · Full day · A true expedition
Caracol
Belize's grandest Maya city, deep in the Chiquibul forest — the journey is half the story.
The experience
Caracol was a superpower — a city of more than a hundred thousand Maya that once defeated mighty Tikal in war. Today Caana, the Sky Palace, is still the tallest man-made structure in Belize, and it stands in the middle of the Chiquibul wilderness with almost nobody around it.
The road in is long and gloriously rough, through Mountain Pine Ridge past waterfalls and swimming holes. Most guests stop at the Rio On Pools on the way back — cold mountain water after a hot day among kings.
What to expect
- Caana — the Sky Palace — with views into Guatemala
- Vast plazas, stelae and ballcourts in near solitude
- Howler and spider monkeys in the surrounding forest
- A swimming stop at Rio On Pools or Big Rock Falls on the return

Good to know
- A genuine full-day expedition — vehicles travel in convoy conditions
- Bring sun protection and a real appetite for adventure
- Worth every pothole. We'll handle the logistics
