Birding & Wildlife

Keel-billed toucans at breakfast, howler monkeys in the canopy. Some guests never leave the garden with their binoculars.

The experience

Cayo is one of the great birding grounds of Central America, and you don't have to go far. Toucans, motmots, parrots and tanagers move through the Villa Massis garden daily; howler monkeys announce themselves like weather.

For a dedicated morning, our guides will take you out at first light — river edges, farmland mosaics and forest trails around Bullet Tree Falls, Cajoy or the Aguacate lagoon country further out. Non-birders convert quickly here.

What to expect

  • Dawn walks with guides who know the calls by heart
  • Keel-billed toucans, motmots, parrots, woodpeckers
  • Howler monkeys, iguanas, coatis and more
  • Coffee before dawn. It's tradition.
